No Steering Wheel! Chongqing’s First 5G Driverless Bus Debuts

The first 5G driverless bus in Chongqing

By Keqiao Cheng, EDITOR
Chongqing – Chongqing welcomed its first driverless bus with no cockpit and even no steering wheel. Due to the high reliability and low latency of 5G network, it can bypass obstacles and adjust forward speed automatically. But this process needs new technologies including omnidirectional detection of vehicle-mounted LIDAR and artificial intelligence algorithms of the on-board computer.

Chongqing’s first 5G driverless bus

This bus has begun trial operation inside China Mobile Chongqing Branch recently, without any human participation.
The all-electric vehicle can carry 12 passengers at most, and the maximum speed reaches 20 km/h. Also, it can bypass pedestrians and obstacles, complete vehicle detection and emergency stop, accelerate and decelerate, and change lanes. In addition, the functions include stopping at an appointed station and switching the turn indicators.
Actually, these functions are based on the above-stated advanced technologies of 5G network and artificial intelligence algorithms.
Furthermore, the bus can carry out collection and analysis on the traffic environment, and use the 5G network for multi-level decisions. Meanwhile, when meeting other vehicles, pedestrians, obstacles, and emergencies, it will give an immediate response.
Moreover, through the 5G network, the staff can achieve video surveillance, schedule alteration, long-range control, and peripheral information collection. Besides this, the bus will also respond to the road condition to ensure safety.

The vehicle for the future

China Mobile Chongqing Branch has witnessed the success of the internal test. And then this technology will also be applied to the unmanned customized shuttle bus in other scenarios of the city. Also, the company introduced that driverless buses would solve problems in airports, campuses, scenic areas, industrial parks, enterprise zones, etc.
These shuttle buses can facilitate the transportation of the public, and make it more intelligent and controllable. The technology also applies to logistics transportation, and to realize unmanned logistics and unmanned manufacturing.
